Dino Cazares of Divine Heresy

We got the chance to fire off some goofiness to DIVINE HERESY's very own, Dino Cazares (ex-FEAR FACTORY). Dino was a good sport, and even typed everything in all caps so you don't have to miss a word he says. I was too lazy to retype all of his answers to be nicer on the eyes, so any and all complaints can be directed to the person sitting next to you. Actually, Dino was a really nice guy and not bothered at all by our childish line of questioning. FoundryMusicRob: Dino, anyone like yourself, who comes from a successful band and then starts up a new project, has to deal with criticism and speculation. What’s the worst fan, or even press related incident, so far.

Dino: I THINK IT'S REALLY COOL SEEING THIS BAND GROW. IT'S VERY EXCITING FOR ME. I'M NOT COMING OUT WITH THE ATTITUDE WHERE I'M DINO CAZARES AND I'M A BIG ROCK STAR. I'M STARTING FROM THE GROUND UP. THERE HAVE BEEN SOME MAGAZINES ACCUSING ME OF BRINGING IN THE HIP HOP ELEMENT INTO FEAR FACTORY, THEY DO NOT KNOW THEIR HISTORY AND THEY HAVE IT ALL WRONG.

FoundryMusicRob: Do you have holes in your underwear?

Dino: NO

FoundryMusicRob: Well then how do you get your legs through?

Dino: HA HA, GOOD ONE

FoundryMusicRob: You just started a tour with Shadows Fall and Static-X, how are the crowds reacting to Divine Heresy?

Dino: THEY ARE LOVING IT. I LIKE THEIR REACTION WHEN WE HIT THE STAGE THEY LOOK AT ME WITH THIS CONFUSION TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHERE THEY KNOW ME FROM, THEN WHEN THEY DO I LOVE THE LOOK ON THEIR FACE. WE PUT ON A GREAT SHOW. WE LOOK FORWARD TO DOING THE CHAMIRA TOUR.

FoundryMusicRob: You were one of the guys that really put 7-string guitars on the map, now there is an 8-string out there from Ibanez, do you think you’ll ever try it, and possibly incorporate it into your already distinct style?

Dino: WELL I'VE BEEN PLAYING THE 8 STRING FOR OVER A YEAR NOW. I'VE RECORDED 2 SONGS ON THE DIVINE HERESY CD WITH IT: "SOUL DECODED" AND "CLOSURE". I LOVE IT AND I'M GOING TO INCORPORATE IT MORE INTO MY STYLE ON THE NEW CD.

FoundryMusicRob: What is your take on people that are afraid to move with the times and utilize something like an 8-string guitar?

Dino: IT TAKES A PERSON WITH A OPEN MIND OR JUST SOMEONE WHO LIKES TO EXPERIMENT WITH DIFFERENT TUNINGS. SOME PEOPLE ARE JUST COMFORTABLE WITH WHAT THEY HAVE AND NOT WILLING TO CHALLENGE THEMSELVES AS A PLAYER/MUSICIAN.

FoundryMusicRob: On the same note, how do you feel about analog recording versus digital recording?

Dino: I'VE USED BOTH AND I LIKE BOTH. HOW I ALWAYS DO IT IS: RECORD CERTAIN THINGS ANALOG AND THEN DUMP IT ONTO THE COMPUTER, THAT WAY YOU GET THE BEST OF BOTH.

FoundryMusicRob: Statistics that I have just now made up show that heavy-set guys with 7-string guitars get more women than skinny guys, or muscular guys with 6-strings. Have you found these statistics to be true?

Dino: VERY TRUE. I HAVE A 15 MIN RULE. EVERY GIRL IS DIFFERENT AND YOU JUST HAVE TO FIGURE OUT SOMETHING ABOUT THEM IN 15 MINUTES. AND THEN ONCE YOU FIGURE OUT SOMETHING THEY LIKE, GO IN FOR THE KILL AND IF YOU GET NO REACTION OR IF SHE DOESN'T GO FOR IT IN THAT TIME THEN YOU MOVE ON. THERE ARE PLENTY OF OTHER GIRLS OUT THERE. DON'T GET ALL BUTT-HURT IF SHE IF SHE REJECTS YOU, MOVE ON.



FoundryMusicRob: Lots of guys have a hard time finding themselves in music, and they all end up sounding the same. Where does a person cross the line from being influenced, to flat-out ripping someone off?

Dino: EVERYONE IS INFLUENCED BY SOMEONE, AND BEING ORIGINAL IS SOMETHING THAT IS HARD TO DO THESE DAYS. JUST TAKE YOUR INFLUENCES AND TRY AND MAKE THEM INTO SOMETHING DIFFERENT.

FoundryMusicRob: On a more personal note, lots of people know you for your music and all, but some people just want to know the warm fuzzy side of Dino. What’s something shockingly embarrassing that you can finally let out to the world? Go ahead, you’re among friends here.

Dino: I LOVE MY G/F AND MY DOG BUTCHER.

FoundryMusicRob: If we were to raid your porn collection, what titles or genres would we find?

Dino: ASS WORSHIP, BREAST WORSHIP, BRAZZERS, FLESH HUNTER, THE ART OF THE CUM FART, OR ANYTHING BY JULES JORDAN OR ERIK EVERHARD.

FoundryMusicRob: If you had to name just one question that you’re sick and tired of answering over your decade-plus career, what would it be?

Dino: I WILL ANSWER WHAT EVER YOU WANT, NOTHING IS A DUMB QUESTION. SOME PEOPLE ASK THE SAME QUESTIONS BECAUSE MAYBE THAT PERSON DOESN'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT YOUR BAND OR ABOUT YOU, SO YOU JUST HAVE TO LET THEM KNOW WHAT'S UP.
