FUSED
I really enjoyed TONY IOMMI's
self-titled solo disc,
because he teamed up with such a diverse cross-section of musicians,
all of whom cited him as an influence. As well they should have,
because Tony Iommi is by all accounts, a living legend. Now that he's
teamed up with GLENN HUGHES (
Check out our interview HERE),
I was skeptical as to what the resulting music would sound like. Would
it be a heavy, crunch-riff-filled, collection of rockers, or would it
be a snooze-fest from a couple of aging rockers trying to recreate the
glory days?
Fortunately, Iommi and Hughes have proven with
Fused
exactly why they're considered such legendary artists. Great artists
make great music (yeah, I know...that was an old CMC international tag
line...it's all Sanctuary now... and that's the company that released
this disc...so there). Glenn Hughes can make the alphabet song rock,
and Tony Iommi has discovered the fountain of rock riffs. "Dopamine"
was a SUPERB choice as a first single. The main riff kicks your teeth
in and Hughes belts out the chorus better than most frontmen 20 years
younger than him.
To be completely honest, even if Tony Iommi has found an endless supply
of rock riffs, the real spotlight is on Glenn Hughes. These tracks
would be fairly average without his signature scream. In addition to
"Dopamine", this fact is most evident in "Grace" and "Face Your Fear".
Fused
isn't going to break any sales records, but it sure as hell shows that
rock riffs and catchy choruses are not a function of one's age. This is
going to stay in the car disc player for a while.
