Tervaskanto
What the hell? Finnish Humpa Folk Metal? Despite the odd genre categorizing, Finland’s KORPIKLAANI is an amazing band. I would best describe them as a combination of FLOGGING MOLLY and FINNTROLL. They are a metal band, but delve into other genres by incorporating bagpipes, flutes, chimes, and the like. Tervaskanto, the band’s latest release, is definitely their best album and showcases what the band is all about.
Just hearing songs like “Let’s Drink,” “Karhunkaatolaulu,” “Misty Fields,” and “Nordic Feast” remind me of sitting in a run-down tavern during the dead of winter while drinking mead and exhanging stories with men with viking beards. Seriously, this album should be played when roasting a freshly killed animal over a fire. It’s that rustic!
As listed above, my favorite songs on this release were “Let’s Drink” and “Nordic Feast”. They are really fun and, honestly, very metal. They are about exactly what the titles would suggest. The only word that comes to mind that can properly describe this album is ROWDY!
I would recommend picking up this album as soon as possible. Especially if you are planning a winter journey through the mountains of Finland.
