A Terrible Thing
If you check out No Machine’s myspace page (www.myspace.com/nomachinemusic), it defines them as making pop music that’s a little on the dark side, and I can’t think of a more appropriate way to explain them. A Terrible Thing sets out to do just that, by being very poppy and yet not being predictable or as artificial as some of the pop acts out there today.
The use of the organ and piano give the songs a very technical and dreamy feel. For the most part A Terrible Thing is very mellow, something you could relax to. Maybe even something you would want to go to sleep to with this playing in the background. Definitely something you might consider popping in if you’ve had one hell of a bad day, instead of letting out your aggression to some Suicide Silence like some of us would rather do.
On a personal level, A Terrible Thing doesn’t do much for me. This is because I usually don’t listen to music that’s this dreamy or mellow. No Machine is absolutely talented and their album and songs are well structured, well played and well sung. The people who can appreciate and enjoy music like this will definitely enjoy it. I will admit that there is one song that I did like, and that was “The Races.” It may even be something I’d add to my iTunes library.
So, what to do? I say check out the band’s myspace page and have a listen for yourself. Especially if this sounds like the kind of music you enjoy. While I regret to say that No Machine doesn’t do it for me in the end, I am happy to say that it has nothing to do with their ability or talent, and I mean every word of it. No Machine will have no problems with finding their audience.
