Worldfall
Nachtmystium is an American psychedelic extreme metal band formed by Blake Judd and Pat McCormick. This is their Worldfall EP which was released due to a split album with Leviathan being delayed. This would have been their half of the split album. It contains three original songs and two cover songs.
The music is very experimental. The title track to Worldfall clocks in at 7 minutes. It’s focused on the music more than the vocals. They do throw in some haunting sounding lyrics every now and then but I feel like this track was more about the music as an introduction to the album. It’s a really cool opening song. Then they kick it into high gear with the full on metal sounding “Depravity.” Heavy chant-like vocals, fast drums, and well its just METAL! “Solitary Voyage” continues the experimental stuff. The vocals remain heavy and throaty but the music gets some spookiness to it instead of heavy drums and fast guitars. It does pick up the pace as it goes on but its very odd sounding at first. When I read that this band doesn’t like to be classified into one genre, they were not kidding.
The cover songs on Worldfall are two songs from bands I don’t listen to so I had no base of comparison. On their own, they hold up well. Nachtmystium may have put their own unique spin on them though. The first is a cover of Death In June’s “Rose Clouds of Holocaust.” The vocals lose the heaviness and it’s yet ANOTHER change in direction for the band. They like to do it all. The final track is a cover of Goatsnake’s “IV” which is very Black Sabbath sounding.
In conclusion, Worldfall was a pretty cool album from a band I hadn’t heard of before. Its short and sweet. But they don’t repeat. They like to mix it up and that’s a pretty cool trait of a band.
