One Live KISS
Paul Stanley is one of the founding members of KISS, but rarely did he dabble in anything much of a solo career. He released one self titled album in 1978 and more recently Live To Win in 2006. One Live KISS is a DVD documenting a performance at the House of Blues in Chicago during the Live To Win tour in November 2006. It begins with a voiceover by Paul himself while old photos are shown. It’s a brief history of Paul Stanley and his dreams to become a famous musician. It’s a good opening and not too long. Short and sweet. After the intro we’re treated to his newest song, “Live To Win.” Its got the 80s cheesiness to the lyrics but it works surprisingly well. It’s a damn good, catchy song and a great way to start the concert.
Then Paul goes into a mixture of his favorite KISS songs and some of his solo stuff. He doesn’t play the most popular KISS songs but as he states in the beginning, he really wanted to play the stuff that he loves. He plays “Hide Your Heart”, “A Million To One”, “Lick It Up”, “Got To Choose”, “Magic Touch” and of course pops out a crowd favorite near the end, “Detroit Rock City.” The band isn’t as close as KISS and there’s not a lot of interaction but the people came to see Paul Stanley and that’s what they get.
One Live KISS does have its fair share of Paul’s solo stuff even though he only had two studio albums. He blasts out “Bulletproof”, “Move On”, and “Tonight You Belong To Me” just to name a few. Paul still sounds great too. For being an older gentleman his voice still holds up well in a live situation. The band is great too. They were the band performing on the TV show Rock Star. There’s a good mixture of younger and older dudes to mesh with Paul’s legendary status. So in conclusion it’s a great concert DVD. It’s a small venue and it really captures the energy of the band especially Paul who can still rock the house after all these years.
