Untold Truths
At first I thought Untold Truths was the result of another Hollywood self-indulgent act gone wrong. Following the shirttails of bands such as Dogstar, Juliette and the Licks, and the ever memorable, Bruno, I really think Modern West will have to work hard to be taken seriously. Country music of the sixties and the seventies had a lot of substance to its songs, a lot more than the country music being produced today. Untold Truths tries to tap into that vein, blending both, new and old styles. The songs are well written, and performed well enough, but there is no hook. “Long Hot Night” is very clunky pop/country song. The violin is very grating, and the lyrics are sophomoric. “90 Miles an Hour”, a track I didn’t like much at first, redeems itself just a little bit more with each listen. This was the case with “Superman 14” as well. I am sure seeing Kevin Costner & Modern West in a live environment would be a pretty good time, but they just seem to miss the boat as far as Untold Truths go.
