WXRK Flips To Mainstream Rock, Launches Separate Internet Channel
April 04, 2005
By Paul Heine and Bram Teitelman

WXRK (K-Rock) New York dropped its modern rock format, flipped to a wide version of mainstream rock and launched a new, separate Internet channel Monday (April 4) shortly after 10:30 a.m.

Dubbed K-Rock 2, the new, separate Internet channel focuses on cutting edge artists such as My Chemical Romance, Mars Volta, Arcade Fire, Interpol, Taking Back Sunday, the Killers, Franz Ferdinand, and Modest Mouse.

WXRK, which initially launched as a classic rock station in 1985 before converting to modern rock, is now positioned as “Great Rock, Period.” The flip was pre-promoted during Monday's Howard Stern Show, with promos proclaiming "the revolution starts today after Howard.”

The station has cut back on current music, playing roughly one current an hour in its first few hours on the air. Music from the '80s and '90s dominates the mix, such as Guns n Roses, Nirvana, AC/DC, Live, Green Day, Alice In Chains, Metallica, Faith No More, Tom Petty, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd.

However, WXRK continues to play Weezer, Marcy Playground, Nine Inch Nails, Violent Femmes and other modern rock artists.

“It's a fairly broad reaching rock station, with currents,” WXRK OM Rob Cross told BillboardRadioMonitor.com.

"K-Rock is always looking for opportunities to further connect with our listeners," Cross said in a statement. "Enhancing our playlist, while simultaneously launching a web stream whose sole purpose is to feature breaking music, enables us to serve a wider audience with the music most frequently requested without changing the fabric of the radio station.

"K-Rock 2 will be the perfect destination for listeners who want to stay up on the cutting edge of new music,” Cross added.

Here's the first 30 minutes of the new K-Rock: Guns N' Roses “Welcome To the Jungle,” AC/DC “For Those About To Rock,” Quiet Riot “Cum On Feel The Noise,” Green Day American Idiot,” Queen “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Beastie Boys “(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!),” Judas Priest “You Got Another Thing Coming,” Red Hot Chili Peppers “Higher Ground.”
