LONG ISLAND JOCKS SPOIL CHRISTMAS FOR KIDS...AGAIN
I guess if you're going to do a decent radio bit, you've got to borrow from the best, right?
From the New York Post:
For five days, WBAB on Long Island urged parents and kids to gather around the radio at 7:20 Monday morning for a VERY BIG announcement.
Thousands did, expecting that the adult-rock FM station at 106.1 on the dial was going to announce a rock concert, as it did last year.
But no. What flabbergasted listeners heard was DJ John Parise, co-host of the morning show, declare, "There is NO Santa Claus. It's MOM and DAD. Go and look in your parents' closets and under the bed and you'll find the gifts."
In seconds, the station was inundated - INUNDATED - with angry calls and e-mails.
Station manager John Olson was abashed.
"I knew he was going to say something to the effect that there was no Santa Claus, but I didn't think it would turn out like that," he said. "It was a big mistake."
The 31-year-old Parise - known as J.P. - refused to apologize.
"Christmas has gotten as far away as possible from what Christmas is about," he said. "It's not about making sure your kid has the hottest toy on the block. Christmas is doing for others, helping others. I'm not a bad guy, I swear."
Charles Perillo of East Northport - who gathered around the radio with his wife, Christina, daughters Alexa, 8, and Desiree, 6, and son, Christopher, 4 - strongly disagreed.
"This guy's the DJ who stole Christmas," he said.
Christina said that when J.P. declared that mom and dad were the real Santa Claus, Desiree's "face just dropped. Her mouth hung open."
But when Alexa looked in the closets, she didn't find any packages. Maybe the DJ was wrong after all.
Yeah yeah yeah, that's all well and good...
But give a listen to this little O&A bit...from 1999...four years ago.
Let's also not forget that Op and Ant used to be ON WBAB, and Roger and JP are familiar with the guys and their bits.
It's ok, fellas. Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery.
Much thanks to a friendly guy named José and our own Sexbagel for the audio.
