brawl erupts during murder arraignment in vermont

August 27, 2007 - Court officers in Bennington were forced to subdue the girlfriend of a murder victim Monday while the accused killer was being arraigned. The Bennington County medical examiner reports that Ronald Wilkins was shot five times before he died. Investigators believe his former brother-in-law, 40-year-old Michael Christmas, pulled the trigger Saturday night in Shaftsbury. Monday in Bennington, Christmas answered to those charges in court. The courtroom was packed with friends and family of both the defendant and the victim. It was also filled with lots of emotion. An arraignment -- even on charges as serious as murder -- usually lasts just a few minutes. Christmas' was no different. But what happened when the proceeding ended was far from typical. This was the first time the victim's loved ones came face to face with the defendant since the Saturday night shooting. Wilkins' girlfriend went on an obscenity laced tirade and had to be dragged out of the room.
