October 22, 2007 - A gas station attendant turns firefighter when a car plows into a pump and it goes up in flames.
It happened at a Chevron Gas Station located at 71st Street and Bay Drive in Miami Beach.
According to Miami Beach police the subject apparently lost control of his Mustang and crashed into one of the islands of gas pumps causing the pumps to catch fire.
The attendant runs back and forth grabbing extinguisher after extinguisher trying to put out the fire.
Finally after three attempts no more flames only smoke and that’s when the fire apartment arrived.
As the explosion happened, the subject fled on foot. However he didn’t get far because he was injured and needed medical help.
Robert Lyon and his wife Marissa watched the commotion from their balcony across the street. Robert a professional photographer grabbed his camera and began shooting the gas station attendant desperately put out the flames.
After a raging fireball shot skyward soon after the accident, 61-year-old Luis Tamayo, the station's attendant, said he had no choice but to fight the fire himself. "I had to find a solution until firefighters arrived," he said through a translator. "I tried to do the best I could with what was available. This gas station was saved because I had three new fire extinguishers."
