November 17, 20007 - Veteran rock climber James Bosson of Clear Lake, a.k.a. Santa, was supposed to repel from the top of the 80-foot sign to the ground, then light the enormous Christmas tree before visiting a crowd of waiting children. Bosson practiced repelling from the sign earlier in the day and said it went perfectly. However, he was not wearing his beard at rehearsal.
The first 50 feet went as planned, but then Bosson hit a snag.
After catching a knife thrown by someone on the ground, he cut away his Santa beard, dropping pieces of it on the ground. Unfortunately, part of it remained tangled in a latch, and he still was unable to repel to the ground.
Conroe Fire Department Battalion Chief Michael Gosselin said he hoped firefighters would have a little something extra in their stockings this year, since they rescued Santa.
