March 16, 2009 - An underwater volcano erupts about 39 miles north-west of the Nuku'alofa, the capital of Tonga, shooting rocks, steam and ash thousands of feet into the air. The eruption caused the formation of a new Island. The Kingdom of Tonga in the south Pacific Ocean is an archipelago of 171 islands, 48 of them inhabited, stretching over a distance of about 800 kilometres (500 miles) in a north-south line. The islands lie south of Samoa, about one-third of the way from New Zealand to Hawaii.
