August 9, 2009 - A six-story hotel in Jhihben township in the eastern county of Taitung toppled into a river around noon in a landslide caused by Typhoon Morakot's torrential rains over the weekend.
Hotel Jinshuai (Chin Shuai Hotel) tilted on its foundations at an angle of 20 degrees Sunday morning after flooding and a landslide washed away a 200-meter area near the building.
It collapsed around noon. All the guests and staff at the hotel had been evacuated to safety before it toppled.
Jinshuai was one of the scores of hotels in Jhihben township, which nestles at the foot of a mountain and is known for its hotsprings.
Some 400 tourists have been stranded in Jhihben, according to reports at noon Sunday.
