husband hires hitman to kill wife - caught on tape
James L. Schuman, 48, of Galesville was convicted in June 1997 of attempted first-degree intentional homicide for trying to hire an undercover agent posing as a hit man to murder his wife. He was sentenced to 35 years in prison. But Schuman appealed his conviction, saying the judge would not allow the jury to consider an entrapment defense. In April 1999, the Court of Appeals overturned Schuman's conviction and ordered a new trial. According to court records, Schuman, embroiled in a bitter divorce and child custody battle, agreed in February 1997 to pay $10,000 for the hit man -- actually a state undercover agent -- to kill his wife of 20 years, Susan Schuman.
