NASH MONEY X TRUST NOBODY SHOW

Posted: Friday, January 18, 2008

London's Mr Alex Nash has served his time in the trenches, and it's only right that he finally got his dues in the highlight of a Bread & Butter that's been marred by certain companies getting shook at the sight of a press pass, fearful that we're keen to grab incognito snaps, and post their sample product with the quickness, accompanied by a hyberbolic sentence. Anyhow - back to Nashville. Working alongside Nike, the fine people of Barcelona's Trust Nobody, and Second Son, Alex's creations have had us, and the internet, going nuts for a minute, and here, he got to shine.

Taking the cut and paste aesthetic far beyond copy and right clicking your way to blog stardom, Nash Money's painstaking approach, and dusted vision of hi-tech footwear reinvented never fails to move us. Having spent the hours leading up to his one-night tenure at the Galleria La Cuchara in a darkened hotel room, stitching until his hands developed pin-shaped dents, we were liking the obvious centrepiece - a True AM97 fused with an FBT, evolving his earlier Visvim sew and shut experiment, and arguably, creating something superior, that carried a homage to the 97's distinctive panelling.

Overseen by custom New Eras aplenty, a Jordan III, with a 'No wood, no refs' Raid II homage on the midsole, gold leaf application and moc stitching looked good, as did some collaborative Dunk action with Mr Will Kemp on artwork duties. A vast collection of patches and motifs, cannibalized from Nash's collection threw back to the man's influences, leading up to some mini 'Nashtronauts,' embellished with a ton of tiny logos and a Dunk Hi turned bike seat were more mad science at work. The previous Visvim, AM87, a Mowabb, and AF1 were also in the mix for a swift retrospective of Alex's work. For a little more insight into his mindset, check out the '06 editorial here. Great stuff, and here's hoping we see plenty more throughout '08....

WHO I AM....

Posted: Thursday, January 17, 2008

every now and then people ask about me.

who am i, why do i do this, what the hay does 2000words mean?

short story long.

in 1993 i officially got hooked on nike.

i've always had an interest in sneakers since i can remember.

i'd mail my money order away for vans when i was 11 or 12 from ads in the back of thrasher magazine. dont worry i couldnt skate.

i'd scour the malls for pumas in hideous neon colors, same for ewings.

and then i started high school in 1993 and joined the cross country running team.

i needed a pair of racing flats, there was a running store by my house but they didnt have that pair that i really wanted. nike zoom country purple waffles to be exact.

so someone introduces me to eastbay magazine.

i turn to the running section and bam.

the shoe molded after kenyans, the nike air rift.

my goodness, i need these. and the waffles.

ACG? what the hell is this?

AIR MOCS!!?!!??!! gimme these too.

my parents only bought me the waffles. i had a case of the crazy i wants.

i'd read every new eastbay like it was the greatest thing ever.

checking the weight of every new pair of spikes that came out, seeing if they could beat the mizunos in lightness.

so high school ends in 1997, by my affection or infection for nikes keeps growing.

i buy more and more pairs of runners. this was when air max actually meant cutting edge. jason kidd always had a hot shoe as did penny. but air max was the thing for me.

so now, im a lil older, a lil wealthier. hmmm remember those rifts. yeah i want to find a pair.

eastbay didnt have em. mall didnt have em. flea markets same.

hmm ebay. thats new let me try. nothin my size.

so i ask jeeves, and he tells me niketalk. im like wow, is this gay or what.

a whole message board for sneakers, ill find these rifts and leave.

but i dont leave. apparently these cement dunk supremes just dropped. and nike has a new skateboarding line.

i remember how badly it bombed not too long ago. Bam for president? anyone remember that?

so i see denim dunks are comin out at a place called supreme. supreme makes nice boxcaps let me check this place out. too bad my dome is too big for em. hmm clientele is across the street.

and then i'm livin in the retro section on niketalk. wait a second. this guy methamphibian is painting sneakers, sick. oh man this guy kvn is too. they talk about some og named skywalker.

and then im feening for every meth post.

then the one and done niketalk custom contest comes out. and this guy kills it. i dont remember his s/n but he evntually becomes SBTG.

so now my harddrive is filling with pics of custom sneakers and all my friends are tired of my ims with links to em. oo206oo forgive me.

so i start a blog. hmmm. a picture is worth a 1000 words and there's 2 pairs of sneakers in a picture....

at least its better than sole sneaker kicks etc..

i find forums all over the net.

communicate with people all over the world, and bring to you what you know today as 2000words.org

i'm 28 years old.

My name is Kevin.

and i love sneakers.

but i am in love with custom sneakers.

i keep my face like ghost did in chessboxing for criminal purposes, so dont hate.

and thats all i gotta say about that.

CONSIDERED JORDAN

Posted: Tuesday, January 15, 2008

the following post has been lifted from Jeff "Staple"'s blog.

Want to see how a project evolves?
Back at the end of 2003-2004, a small renegade team at Nike wanted to start something within the company that took a hard look at the environment. The team had to be small, and quite honestly, secretive. Because they all knew that obstacles lay ahead. That small team approached Staple from the beginning and asked for our help. After all, they had to go outside the company for as much help as they could get. I signed on right away. From there, I remember small, secret meetings in tucked away conference rooms at Beaverton Nike HQ, with people I only dreamed of meeting. Guys who designed shoes that I saved up weeks and weeks for when I was a kid. It was inspiring. We were all in the room trying to make a dream a reality. I still have a folder on my hard drive called "Nike Eco-Tech"—that was the codename for the project. This would eventually become what we named, Nike Considered. From those initial meetings, it took about 2 years to see the project become a reality. At first, Considered was a capsule collection. Then it became a way of thinking across the entire company. I remember in those early days, we said, "Sure, we can make brown sandals that are eco-friendly all day long. But wouldn't it be cool if one day, an NBA basketball player is playing in Nike Considered?"
Well, I honestly didn't think it would be this fast...but the upcoming Air Jordan 23 is made fully CONSIDERED. To be qualified as CONSIDERED, is must maintain these benchmarks:
1. Must be made from recyclable materials. (i.e., 100% recyclable plastics or veg-tanned leathers.)
2. Zero Toxins. Zero chemical adhesives. (no glue.)
3. Mechanical vs Chemical. (using mechanics and engineering to put the shoe together instead of chemical solutions.)
4. Closed Loop Technology. (the shoe must be able to come back 100% as another shoe or something else. Nothing goes to waste.)

I'm really glad Nike decided to use the Air Jordan as a platform for Considered. It puts the entire process into the public spotlight. And honestly, that says a lot. In 2004, there were big people at Nike that didn't want Considered to see the light of day. It's great to see that it overcame.

Here are some inside looks at how Considered progressed...

considered_chalk.jpg
Everything starts with ideas on paper. Or in this case...on chalkboard. Back in 2005, we launched Nike Considered in NYC at Reed Space. The line went around the block to see what was up. Imagine that...Street kids and sneakerheads lining up to see the next innovation in ecology. Check out more photos from our launch here. From 2004-2005-2008...this project has literally had a life of its own.

THE FINAL PRODUCT. This was the first production model of the Nike Considered boot. We cut it open so customers could see how it was made and that there was really no glue involved. The AJ23 shares many of the same design principals.

AJ23. I am sure this isn't as completely "green" as our first design, but it is a step in the right direction that every other company should be following. Read the CNN report here as well.
