THE STINKY, STINKY 'VILLAGE'

Posted: Monday, August 2, 2004

The long-awaited M. Night Shyamalan thriller The Village hit theathers this weekend but instead of hitting moviegoers with the well thought-out, spooky movie we've all come to expect of Shyamalan, we basically just got hit in the wallet.

A movie is only interesting because you want to know what happens at the end right? Well, what happens when you figure out the end during the first 25 minutes? You get a really boring flick that just deserves to be walked out of on principle. How stupid does Night think we are? I pay hard earned money to be entertained for 2 hours and end up with what could've been at best, a sub-par episode of The Outter Limits. Hell, I mean, why don't you just write a movie where water fearing aliens are going to try to take over a planet thats 85% water with moisture in the air at all times? Beings that have the ability to travel millions of miles throuh space but can't shove their way out of a pantry. Signs
'SIGNS' reviewed in four easy steps
Oh...yeah.....that's right.

Not that I'm knocking the performances of the cast, they did quite well. Bryce Dallas Howard played her role superbly desipite being a virtual unknown. But are we really to believe that Joaquin Phoenix is really in his late teens?

The premise is quite interesting though, a small simple village manages to function despite the fact that creepy, mysterious creatures suuround them by all sides. Some time ago a "truce" was called so that the villagers don't cross the boundaries nor do the creatures. Done correctly, this could've been a decent enough movie. However, you can feel Night dragging out a screenplay 45 minutes at best. Not only that but the deceptive trailers have you to believe this will be an interesting horror/thriller with a huge twist. In reality it's more of a chick-flick love story between Howard and Phoenix which ends much like a Mets game...badly.

If you're the kind of person who loves director trademarks, then this is the film for you. You'll pick up many Night-isms in this film almost the same way you would with Kevin Smith, who, well, is in the same boat as Night really, who should've cashed in his chips with Clerks. As with Nights The Sixth Sense these two directors would have been considered legends in their own time, and are now reduced to the average hollywood whore, pimping their stinky snacth for $9 a pop plus popcorn.

The only thing worth the price of admission is seeing the teaser trailer for Batman Begins due out in summer '05. Hopefully they'll get it right. As for The Village?

Rent Planet of the Apes and The Blair Witch Project and watch 'em at the same time. Sure, it'll be the same price, but at least you can pause 'em to take a dump.

RADIO DAYS

Posted: Friday, August 23, 2002

I cannot even begin to describe the feelings I have right now. I mean, I know it's just a radio show, but shit man, I just can help it. And I know I'm not alone. After listening to O&A for about 3 and a half years you kinda grow a bond to guys and the entire show. I'm wrong. It's not just a radio show. Not to me at least. It's more like a 3 million member family. And family stick together.

I can remember the first time I ever listened to O&A. I was driving to *Frenchie voice* Staten Island with my father. My pop has asked me if I had ever heard of O&A. I never had and I thought the name was kinda goofy so I was expecting some whack-zane-erffic type of radio show. As my father reached to turn up the volume I can remember thinking to myself "It won't be as funny as he says, nobody's funnier than Stern." But sure as shit, I was wrong. The boys were in the midst of a wrong number phone call. Apparently a woman had called their show, and thought she had called a music store. I recall her asking Ant if they had any "Lenny Skeenerd." Ant said no, we don't but if you like him we have some Zed Leppelin. Or something like that. Anyhow by the time my father and I reached Staten Island, I had already enlisted in the O&A army.

I ended up moving in with my father on Staten Island and commuting from there to Midtown was a huge pain in the ass. I had to take a bus to a ferry to a fucking train. Ouch! But I didn't have to be at work until 6pm, so during my "morning" commute I would listen to O&A. I can't even count how many times I'd be on the ferry or the bus trying desperately to hold in my laughter because I didn't want to look like a retard laughing hysterically by myself with tears streaming down my face. The best though, was when you'd see a guy a few seats down with his headphones on trying to pull the same bullshit you are at the exact same times. So you knew they we're listening to O&A too.

I know I wasn't there for the true beginnings in the WAAF days, but I sure as shit feel like I have been. To be honest, I'm not even sure if there's another person out there who has logged as many O&A hours as I have. So many classic shows. The original 55 Gallon Drum Challenge, Mendi, shooting a whistler out of a vage on the 4th, Dice's very first in studio appearance, the invention on the silent game, mother fucking Spaz! C'mon, the fucking guy thought a tampon went in a chick's ass for Christ's sake! Man I could go on and on. How about the very first Sex for Sam where ironically Psycho Mark was apparently fired for having his couple to the 'ol two point conversion on Ken Steven's couch. Man, did that foreshadow things to come or what. Fuckin creepy. Now I finally know how Boston felt the first time around. I can't imagine what it must be like for them, to lose 'em all over again.

When Ron & Fez announced the news at 7pm, I was stunned, I figured the boys would be suspended and the whole thing would just slowly be forgotten. Maybe a fine at the most. But being fired? That's just plain fucked up. When you really look at the whole thing, should'nt it be management who gets fired? I mean sure, O&A did come up with the idea, but didn't management have to approve it? It's O&A's job to come up with stupid ideas. It's management's job to filter those ideas and see which ones the boys could get away with. In my book I say fire management and let O&A keep their jobs. O&A were a huge money maker for Infinity, and for them to just throw them away like garbage...well, it's just plain 'ol fucked up. It's not even like the broadcast was lewd or graphically explained. How in the world can the FCC wield so much power?

Where will O&A end up next if they stay in NY? Who the fuck knows. The only station I could think of is Q104 and who know if that will ever happen. At least in the foreseeable future. Hell, they don't call us the O&A army for nothing, I think it's time to rally the troops and show our support for the boys who were unfairly fired. I would hate for this to go away quietly. I want to show the media that for every one person who finds the show offensive, there's 1000 who don't. This is supposed to be a country where the majority rules. And I think there are more of us who enjoy O&A then those who go as far as to file complaints with the FCC.

On a side note, being the loser I am, once this whole thing got into the media, I started checking out the NY Radio Message Board. What I found there was fucking disgusting. There was this one guy who posted that he had not even heard the broadcast, but was going to file an FCC complaint anyhow. How the fuck is THAT fair.

If you'd like to email the FCC to let them know why O&A did NOTHING wrong feel free to email FCCINFO@FCC.GOV. And don't be jackasses fellas; We need them to take us seriously...for once.
