THE MOST BEAUTIFUL MOMENT ON A REALITY SHOW I'VE EVER SEEN...
Posted: Tuesday, April 14, 2009
I lost my faith in reality television some time ago. What started in documentary films turned into one of the biggest missed opportunities in mainstream television. Reality television could've been our window into the human condition, showcasing the magnificence of people and teach valuable lessons of tolerance and love. Along came the scum, like the guys from 51 minds, Cris Abrego and Mark Cronin, two awful people who twisted that vision to appeal to the gutter entertainment lover in all of us. What was something pure and beautiful became genre of cookie-cutter scripted smut where only the most vapid and worthless of people get any attention and little in the way of real humanity ever made it to the screen. I thought the promise of reality television was lost forever.
And then I found this video. The setup: Another audition for cookie-cutter talent show Britain's Got Talent. A nice old lady of simple means auditioning as a singer. No professional background, just an amateur with a dream. Dismissed because of her frumpy appearance and age, she's mocked with laughter when she even suggests she could sing as well as some of her own idols. Then, in a moment of pure humanity, she thunder strikes them with a voice from on high and every single one of the sheep that doubted her eats their own foot. At one point, Simon even puts his head in his hands and just smiles in awe of her. It was a trumph over expectation and under-estimation.
Moral: Humanity is a force of nature, and not even the steaming pile of dogshit that is reality television can ever hold it back. Bravo, Susan.
If you're wondering whether I wept, the answer is yes. Then I immediately called myself a faggot and watched porn.
