I think about the reaction in the Judeo-Christian world if word got out that Muslim interrogators had thrown a Bible or Torah into a toilet. I cannot imagine worldwide demonstrations by Catholics, Protestants, and Jews, calling for a holy war against the Muslims. We don't even get that outraged when civilian prisoners' heads are sawn off on video. We should be galvanized to fight to the death over this, to destroy them, plow their bones into the earth, and sow salt so nothing will ever grow there again. But no, our passions are spent as we argue whether or not a little boy should be returned to his father in Cuba, or we are holding vigil over a brain-dead woman who had her feeding tube pulled. I am using hyperbole for the sake of my point, but I hope you get the idea.
Religious fundamentalism is rarely a good thing. Consider the example of women's center doctors being murdered by extremist pro-lifers, as they cite religious reasons for their actions. Likewise, the religious fervor of so many Muslims who call for our deaths because someone supposedly threw a Koran into a toilet is equally dangerous. I, for one, do not wish to live in a world where innovation and original thought are seen as heresy, and religion holds such power over others, and is used as the justification to cause harm. This is why we must win, and so thoroughly crush our opposition that there is no chance of their rebuilding. We have got to get a bit of passion ourselves.
I just wish this is what we were doing now.
I refer to "we" as a country, people, as a way of life that 170 million others worldwide are dedicated to destroying. The Muslim extremists (10% of the Muslim world, and growing) want to kill us. They do not want to enact "regieme change," negotiate, bargain, nor arrange. They want us DEAD. The Muslim extremists/Wahabi are currently the greatest threat to Western Civilization.
I am flabbergasted that Americans can witness such foul acts of torture and barbarism against civilian hostages and not want to utterly destroy the individuals who did it, obliterate the ones behind it, and remove forever their capacity for waging war. We need to do what it takes to win, yet we mire ourselves in political correctness and "feel good" philosophy.
And by the way, before I am accused of jingoistic dick-waggling, we helped cause part of this by attacking Iraq before we had completed things in Afghanistan.
However, mark my words; I believe that the Western world (North America, Europe, etc.) is now engaged in a struggle for its very existence, and we have a bunch of cowards and morons at the helm.
I read this by someone: “I still think it's amazing that the people who benefit least from wars are the people putting their lives on the line, and those who benefit the most and are the biggest proponents (especially politicians) either don't serve, worm their way out of serving, or get cushey officer or stateside assignments (some that don't even involve doing any work - sound familiar?)”
I would like to assure this guy that has always been the case. The poor, disenfranchised masses are under the yoke of the landed aristocracy. In the past, weathy families bought their sons exemptions, hiring a poorer man to serve in the armed forces instead of them. There is little doubt, as far as I am concerned, that GWB used his family's influence to avoid serving in Viet Nam, as have many others before him.
I am by no means a conservative; however, to say that this is still a war over oil is probably not the case. Oil continues to go up in price, GWB walks down the shady lanes handholding with the Saudi crown prince in a vain hope to kiss ass and lower oil prices, and the flower of American youth keeps going down like wheat before the scythe. The REAL culprits, i.e. the Saudi royals, remain in power, ruthlessly opressing their people, funding Muslim terrorism, and keeping us hostage to their oil. These are the ones we should crush like the poisonous bugs they are.
The Muslim extremists have made this a religious war, and day by day, continue to win converts over to their side. Do people not understand that this has reached the point where this will not end, ever, until one or the other of us is destroyed? The Muslim extremists want us DEAD. We should be making sure that is what happens to ALL of them.
I shall give a personal example of why live and let live does not always work in the real world. This little slice of life is perhaps a metaphor for the way things have now become. In 1986 when I lived in NYC, I was mugged for the second time. The first time resulted in a broken nose for me, but that is another story. The individuals who held me up were armed, one with a butterfly knife, and one with some kind of lockblade. They told me to give them my money, so I did.
Then they said that they were going to cut me anyway. Now, did I try to negotiate with them, or sympathize with their economic status or their drug problems? No. They wanted to kill me. I had cooperated with them to avoid violence, and they were going to kill me anyway.
I had just recently completed a rather intensive advanced unarmed combat course; not a formal marital art, just self-defense, which means when you are done, you KNOW you can kick almost anyone's ass. (which means you can avoid fights) I was filled with such a towering rage that these savages were going to try to kill me after I had cooperated, that I attacked them.
When I was done, I had been slashed on the forearm and face, had a black eye and a bloody nose. They, on the other hand, had multiple broken bones, missing teeth, severe head trauma, and I hope severe internal injuries. One was in the hospital for four months, and one for five, and a month of that was on a feeding tube.
I am not saying this to blow my own horn or anything. I am using it as an example of how when the real world smashes down the door of your safe little life, sitting on the sidelines and hoping things get better is not always an option. It was them or me, and I chose me.
Right now, it is either the Muslim extremists who want to kill all Americans, or we Americans and our way of life. I choose us.
