ACCELERATED EVOLUTION

Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. That is the only thought running through my head as I listen to this disc. Rarely do you get the opportunity to hear music this deep, passionate, emotional and dense, and rarely will you hear someone do it as well as Devin Townsend. This guy is simply one of the brightest lights in the music industry and his abilities are un-matched. This is a rare glimpse into a true artists mind and soul, and without getting too hoaky or metaphysical on you guys, this disc is one of those albums that will take some time to fully appreciate. After spending close to a week with this disc in the player NON stop (Ebay RULES for getting CD's a bit earlier than the release date - but don't worry Devin, I bought a copy the day it came out as well), I can honestly say that this will be one of the best discs released this year. Ok, so you ask why?

Rarely can an an artist/musician truely reach a point in their musical life where ideas flow freely as they do on this disc. There is so much going on during each track, that they are similar to the likes of orchestral movie scores, rather than the bombastic metal so often plagueing the scene these days. Each track is brimming with energy, tight musicianship, melody and most importantly hooks. I can't honestly tell you too much about individual tracks, because this disc simply flows together and creates one hell of a musical journey. Townsend's penchant for huge melodies, brutally heavy passeges and cascading moments of true melodic bliss and known from his past works such as "Infinity", "Ocean Machine", and the amazing "Terria". 'Accelerated Evolution' draws from the many sides of Devin Townsends often dark mindscapes. A touch of Strapping Young Lad brutality, the strong melodic passages of 'Terria', and the lush orchestration of 'Ocean Machine'. Townsend posseses a voice so intense, and beautiful that he can go from a whisper to a scream at the drop of hat all the while singing some of the most melodic passages around. There is no way to easily describe Townsend's music, is it rock? Is it metal? Is it Prog? is it Alternative? Let's leave it at simply brilliant music that graces our ears only on rare occassions. Is Devin Townsend the messiah of metal? I believe he is. He is simply one of the brightest hopes on the music scene today and I can only hope that his music reaches audiences the world over, who will praise a man for creating something so unique and beautiful that it will stand the test of time for decades to come.

Simply one of the best discs this reviewer has heard in years.
