SPIDER-MAN 2 SOUNDTRACK
I'm always anxious to see how a sequel's soundtrack measures up to that of the original, so in preparation for this review, I went back to check out my review of the original
Spider-Man Soundtrack to see what I thought of that one.
Nice, eh? Must have been one of those reviews I told myself I'd "get back to once I have more time". I guess I never got back to it. Shit.
Thankfully, I remember that I enjoyed the original soundtrack immensely. Obviously, "Hero" was a huge track for Chad Kroeger and Josey Scott, and SUM 41 had success with "What We're all About". SLIPKNOT's Corey Taylor (who re-released the song under the STONE SOUR name) even broke through with "Bother". Three big hits from a blockbuster soundtrack isn't bad, but it's reasonable to assume that the producers could follow it up with a few home runs with the
soundtrack to the second film, right?
Right.
The two major grand slam tracks are placed right up front, as they should be. "Vindicated" by DASHBOARD CONFESSIONAL and "Ordinary" by TRAIN are already all over the video outlets and radio. The HOOBASTANK track is commendable, but I'm not a huge fan of those guys, so I'm indifferent as to its mass appeal. "Woman" by MAROON 5 could be huge for them, even without the help of being on a major motion picture soundtrack (also, it's important to realize that some soundtrack songs never make it to the final cut of a film, hence the "music from and
inspired by subtitle).
The YELLOWCARD, TAKING BACK SUNDAY, and ATARIS tracks are solid, catchy pop songs, but neither is blowing my hair back. I was anxious to hear the LOSTPROPHETS track, but "Lucky You" isn't the best representation by those guys.
Start Something is a much better collection of Lostprophets songs.
"We Are" by ANA JOHNSON has hit potential, and the video is pretty cool. She's cute too (in an AVRIL LAVIGNE kind of way...only less whiny), so chances are she'll sell CDs based on guys wanted to check out her ass.
Rounding out the soundtrack, as they should, is "Someone To Die For" co-written by Chris Cornell of AUDIOSLAVE, and performed by New Jersey native JIMMY GNECCO of OURS featuring Brian May, which sounds as close to a QUEEN song would in 2004, and two tracks from composer DANNY ELFMAN, which as expected, are exceptional.
An amazing soundtrack for the Amazing Spider-Man.
