Wow. That little hiatus away from MEGADETH did Dave Mustaine a world of good. I heard "Die Dead Enough" on WAAF late last week while driving up to Boston for a long weekend. I was floored when I heard it, because I wasn't expecting it to be as melodic as it was. Think Countdown To Extinction, only slightly more hummable. That's what "Die Dead Enough" is. I haven't heard much else from the upcoming The System Has Failed, but if it's anything like this, I'll be thrilled. Mustaine is at his most creative when he's in control of everything (and sober), apparently. This is some of the finest songwriting Dave has ever done.
Megadeth purists are going to disagree with me. I don't care though, because I've been buying this band's music since Peace Sells... was released. I like it when bands evolve. I can't stand when they keep releasing the same shit over and over again. There aren't any Rust In Peace-era riffs in this song; it seems like Mustaine is concentrating more on melody and hooks than speed...which is good. Radio programmers seem to agree as well, because this is getting more advance airplay than any Megadeth tracks I can remember (don't quote me on that though; this is not exactly prime Megadeth time in radio). Maybe it's because of his cameo in the METALLICA movie that programmers are picking up on it. Doubtful. Who knows, maybe... Chances are that you're not going to see the "Die Dead Enough" video on MTV. MTV2, maybe. FUSE maybe. Definitely not MTV though.
