THE UNDERGROUND PERSONALITY TAPES

I have had The Underground Personality Tapes for about a week now, but I've only been able to listen to it for the past few days.

Why?

Because it's a DVD...and despite being TOLD this a number of times prior to receiving it, it must not have registered...because the FIRST thing I did when I got it was shove it into my car CD player. Of course, it didn't play.

I finally popped into my DVD player and got it working, and I have to say that releasing your audio debut on DVD when most people are used to getting CDs is a bold move. Some might say foolish, but after reading about ROXY SAINT, I doubt she cares very much.

Roxy Saint is a self-described "musiciain, artist, and guerilla filmmaker", and supports this title by directing a short video to accompany each song on the disc. The videos for the songs are quirky...just like she is...just like the music is. I would liken the tracks to MARILYN MANSON (earlier Manson, that is), and QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE. Very fuzzy guitars, stomping drum beats, and these droning vocals make it easy to imagine Roxy developing a big following with the disenfranchised outcast adolescent crowd.

It wasn't until a friend of mine walked into the room while the video during a scene in which Roxy is being driven around by former QOTSA bassist Nick Olivieri, and said "Whoa, that's so Warhol"...that I remembered a film I saw in college called Trash. That was a fucked-up artsy film that I never quite got my head around, but I'll bet you anything Roxy has seen it.

"Fuck Song" is pretty catchy, but I don't see it getting too much airplay. She does a good job with the cover of IGGY POP's "I Wanna Be Your Dog" too. the whole disc is very raw and very punky. The seedy imagery makes me think Roxy's upbringing was pretty gritty; like maybe she was exposed to a lot more hookers, drug addicts, and pimps than your average kid.

Then again, I could be wrong.

Oh, I almost forgot... Roxy surrounds herself with a lot of good-looking girls in the video footage; girls who occasionally like to show off their boobs. And as we all know, boobs = FUN.
