RISK - REMIXED & REMASTERED
I never understood what the big beef with
Risk was. Yeah, I know the MEGADETH purists fucking loathed it, and beat up on Mustaine pretty badly for releasing the song "Crush 'em" (it was Goldberg's theme when he was with the WCW..so you'd THINK it would have given the band a little more of an advantage than it did). Honestly (and Mustaine mentions this in the liner notes to the
remixed and remastered version), I think if this disc was released under a different name, things would have played out differently for Megadeth. There wouldn't have been the backlash from the hardcore fans, and maybe some of the
Rust In Peace-era members would still be in place. Personally, I don't think "Crush 'em" or the dance remix (one of the bonus tracks) is a bad song per se, but I can see why some of the hardcore followers of the band scolded them for selling out. I don't agree, but I do understand.
I fully appreciate the re-done cover art and the return to the original pointy, chrome Megadeth logo on the revised
Riskcover. I never liked that anorexic, uncool logo that was used on the
original version.
I agree with Mustaine that following the advice of Bud Prager, a manager that used to handle FOREIGNER might not have been the best ideas, and that's why
Risk should have been released as a solo disc by Mustaine or under a different moniker. It's not a bad disc though; not even remotely. This is some of the best writing that I've heard from Mustaine (My all-time favorite is
Countdown To Extinction, but that one was loved by a ton of people... this one didn't get a whole lot of love).
