GARAGE DAYS
A movie review, that’s a first for me people. Watch out the next half of Ebert and Roper when Ebert cashes in his chips! Yeah, if only I’d get paid to write reviews and watch my ass get bigger.
There is definitely an AC/DC tip going on throughout this movie and no, this isn’t a METALLICA movie (yes, I know
Garage Days is the title of a Metallica disc...duh)! Freddy the lead kid found himself pissing his pants to punk in the Summer of 1985. Australian bands were on the decline and his band was going for it. You know one gig can change your life?
The Cinematography was definitely cool with the cooler backdrop of that Aussy country. Some might consider this to be in that The Commitments type area, but punk. Another wild part of the movie is the references to Kiss. They even have an old KISS book that is in the movie as with makeup on some other players in the movie. This is definitely more on that silly side of humor of what it is like being in a garage band.
Those listening close might hear some ska in the mix of the movie. You get the old love stories peppered in to the whole mix or the music, blah to love stories. Sprimp is the band Kern Management was chasing in the movie the whole ride and he had a band right under his nose.
Freddy and band have everything go wrong one by one. One cheats, one struggles with tripping out (yea, this is from the makers of Dark City, The Crow and I, Robot) and chick hands. Just pure turmoil is here. The Cure resonates and the thoughts of Trainspotting and Quadrophenia come into play. They are funny moments none the less.
They go on to raise $1200 for the perfect gig to impress the management. There are other parts that include dumplings and airplanes and they hit at perfect times. Or the under the table BJ is damned funny. As it goes the club they were gonna play was turned into a casino. The band stays on the verge of breakup. More pure LSD tripping happens at a party. One person does die in the movie and some others end up in an AC/DC cover band. In the end Homebaked booked them then they get bumped, they sneak on the stage and just suck! Be aware of the standard story that changes gears a few times. It is a funny movie but not side splitting.
