THE WORDS IN INK DON'T LIE
I'm not the biggest fan of the screamo genre, so doing this review was a little more than a challenge. I would compare the experience to veggie burgers. If veggie burgers don't do it for you, it's not going to matter how many different brands someone sticks in front of you. You're just not going to be able to get your lips around it. That's kind of the way I feel about ENDICOTT's debut concept disc for Equal Vision Records,
The Words in Ink Don't Lie. The band used the same production team that THURSDAY, TAKING BACK SUNDAY, and BEAR vs. SHARK (3 prominent Screamo acts) implemented, so I'm going to guess that these guys couldn't have had a better group behind them.
I wouldn't know what good screamo acts were if ithey bit me in the ass, and announced "Hello, we're a decent band who some classify as 'screamo'...nice to meet you." Having said that, I think Upsate New York's Endicott are competent musicians, but I'm not 100% sure I get where they're going with the songs.
The Words in Ink Don't Lie is a concept album about a kidnapping; that much I got. There's some single potential with "One Bleeding to Death" and "Chain Letter", but I don't think commercial success is going to be huge for these days until they can write a song that's going to appeal to the cut-and-paste pop music-drenched public. Sad, but true.
If you're a huge fan of Thursday, and Taking Back Sunday, you really should pick this up.
Otherwise... it's one hell of a veggie burger.
