STREET FIGHTER ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION

HADOOKEN !! the 15th Anniversary Street Fighter Collection has finally arrived time to reminisce about lining up quarters at the arcade or 711 where you spent most of your lunch money. There are 3 reasons to purchase this game but unfortunately none of them are worth the $29.00 price tag. First you get every single character from every whored out version of street fighter from the original to super. Then you get street fighter 3, the latest in the series, and the only real reason to by this game. Finally you get the street fighter anime, a nice touch and an awesome movie to boot. Sounds good enough but after you play through all the different versions you will probably end up sticking with the last and best version, Super Street fighter or Street fighter 3rd Strike. Kind of like that Chinese food in the back of your fridge, the original games do not hold up as well as you may think.

While playing any of the classic street fighters you are going to notice a blur, it is not because you watched naughty neighbors 15 too many times. It is because the colors are pretty dull and washed out. The game just doesn’t look that good. Arcade perfect, apparently arcade graphics sucked 15 years ago. Street fighter 3rd strike, is a different story. This bad boy hums along and is really nice to see in motion. The graphics are crisp, there is no slow down anywhere when things get hairy on screen. This is what you are going to be playing most of the time unless you want to take a stroll down memory lane.

Sound wise it is what you remember from the arcade, muffled voices, half phrases and the all too happy announcer. Some extra songs you can change and customize but you won’t be singing any of them on your way to work. Man, how many times have you hummed the 1-2 level of Super Mario Brothers ?

The Street Fighter 2 movie is worth a watch, it is actually a good anime based on a video game. There are some nice fight scenes and every character from all the street fighter 2 games make an appearance in one form or another.

100 fights in I was left wanting more, after playing thru the modes and different versions it just didn’t seem worth the effort. If you are a real die hard street fighter fan I say pick this one up. And by die hard I mean you have dressed up as Ryu at some point.

Over all I have to say that I was expecting more from an anniversary edition, this is what we all talked about having in 1994. An arcade perfect version of the street fighter series, it’s just that in 2004, we have come to expect a little more.
