MORTAL KOMBAT: DECEPTION
Well, this weekend I was hoping that
Mortal Kombat Deception could kill a few days till GTA comes out. No such fucking luck. There are some ideas that seem more like annoying add-ins instead of well thought out extras. If you are looking for a totally new experience, this is not it. Within the first half hour, I felt like I was playing the same game a year ago when midway got my first $50 bucks.
If you are new to the 3D MK, there have been some changes from the older games. Any of the characters you choose have 3 fighting styles that can be changed with a push of a button. Two of the styles are hand to hand Karate, Kung Fu, Tae Kwon Do, and the last is a weapon unique to the fighter. Fighting with a weapon makes your attacks stronger but you are more vulnerable to taking damage. Mortal Kombat has always been about blood. This new version is full of death and gore and fatalities. Each character has 2, with a suicide move and most levels have an environmental fatality. From what I saw, they are pretty much everything you have seen before if you played any of the other games: all bloody and gory.
Additions to the standard, (versus, single player and story mode) there is a chess game where you control a chess board of MK characters. The other addition is a puzzle game similar to Tetris, basically you match your colors, and the falling blocks explode.
Yawning yet?
The best new feature is the ability to rip out your buddy’s spine online. Playing online is pretty easy, and I didn’t notice any slowdown or technical issues when smashing my buddy’s character in Michigan. You can also play the chess and puzzle game online, but who wants to?
Overall I threw my rented copy of
Mortal Kombat Deception back into the video store slot with a little extra aggression. Pissed off, because the same recycled shit comes out year after year.
If you have to buy MK, wait till next year, when it goes to greatest hits for $19.99……
