REISE, REISE
Outside of playing audio from a Hitler youth rally, I can't think of a more appropriate soundtrack to go along with the image of a thousand marching, pissed off Germans.
Goddamn, RAMMSTEIN is back.
We're not going to see this disc in the U.S. until mid-November, but since I'm the kind of fella I am, I managed to get an advance copy from the label. I'm glad I did, too. I've been feeling all kinds of stressed out lately, and when you're stressed out, and in the mood to put your fist through a wall, you need music to accompany you. This, kids... is the kind of music I needed.
Reise, Reise starts off a little clunky with the title track, but kicks into gear with "Mein Teil", which was released as single #1 in Europe. The U.S. is going to get the song "
Amerika" as a first single...which, in my honest opinion...was a mistake. It's a sub-par song, and while I understand wanting to use a gimmick song to appeal to us fucktard Americans, I think we're going to see right through this attempt to cash in on our fickle musical tastes and weak attention spans.
The one thing I think
Reise, Reise is missing that previous releases had was the quick tempo. Sure, the growling German lyrics are there, as are the beefy guitars and drums...but the pace is a little slower than I'm used to hearing from this band. Every song on
Herzeleid is like the soundtrack to a savage beating.
Reise, Reise is like the soundtrack to a slow, agonizing torture scene in a David Fincher movie.
"Keine Lust" gives a hint of the old with its quick-paced kick-drum, and the bridge at 2:20 would serve as a nice theme to linger while disemboweling the parents of the asswipe who bullied you in high school. (not that you SHOULD do such a thing, but if you were going to...and needed a soundtrack...this would work).
Anyone who says that acoustic guitars can't be angry ought to check out "Los". Feel the sounds of wood and steel, bitch.
Skip "Amerika"... Blech. " Amerika ist wunderbar"...please.
I wanted to give
Reise, Reise five stars, because I'm an honest-to-god FAN of this band. I'm not going to though, because they didn't give me my 'drive-really-fast-and-beat-the-shit-out-of-the-mailman'...that's ok. I'll pop in
Herzeleid and strap on my shit-kicking boots.
