HAS BEEN
I wanted SO badly to kick the shit out of this CD. I wanted SO badly to mock Shatner for shamelessly capitalizing on being an aging famous guy.
Crap. I can't. I like this disc.
Hell, he even NAMED the disc
Has Been, so you know he's got a sense of humor about himself. Crap. Crap. Crap. Crap. It really sucks not having some angle to beat up on this guy.
The other aspect of this disc that shut me down was the fact that BEN FOLDS produced the sucker. I like what Ben Folds is doing; ever since I was working in clubs in Boston, and saw the Ben Folds Five perform live, I knew this guy would be a powerful presence in the music business. With the help of Folds, William Shatner has produced eleven memorable tracks that are presented with a real sense of cohesion...uniformity...whatever you want to call it. It's good.
I gravitated toward the slower tracks on the disc, "It Hasn’t Happened Yet" and "That's Me Trying" because Shatner's spoken word delivery lends itself to the slower tracks.
Also... the Shatner/Henry Rollins beat-poetry duet, "I Can't Get Behind That" fucking rocks. So angy. So venomous. So... perfect.
the BRAD PAISLEY duet, "Real" is so introspective, it just spells it out so completely...Bill Shatner is painfully aware of who he is, and isn't apologizing for it.
Just buy the fucking CD. It's great. Shatner is Kirk. Shatner is cool again. Shatner... needs to be interviewed on this site. Someone get me his fucking phone number.
