GOLD MEDAL
THE DONNAS latest disc,
Gold Medal, could be the most appropriately named disc I've picked up in recent months. I really liked their last disc,
Spend the Night, and the single "Take It Off" was their best up to that point. They've far exceeded expectations on this new disc.
It's an appropriately timed release, really. 70's sounding rock acts like THE DARKNESS and JET are really huge, so it would stand to reason that if the Donnas could come up with some hooky, stripped, classic-sounding tracks, they could finally get the recognition they've been hoping for.
"Fall behind Me" is the best single they've ever put out. An instant classic, and the video is a throwback to 70's blacklite poster art (unicorns, rainbows, etc.)...so is the cover of the CD for that matter. It's a felt-covered pencil-drawn piece that looks like a
Charlie's Angels tribute. "I Don't Want To Know" is another hooky gem and a great track to lead the disc off with. My one beef with this CD is that the song quality falls off a little after "The Gold Medal", but feel free to disagree. Every song is hooky, but the latter half of the disc just seems LESS hooky. Again, that's just my opinion.
The bonus DVD footage includes the "Fall Behind Me" video, the making of the video, and the entire audio disc... it's also burned on to the back portion of the CD, which made for a slightly confusing episode trying to figure out which side went UP when inserting it into the car disc player... Then of course I saw the big "This Side Up" label.
When all else fails, read the directions.
