LIVE ALL OVER THE PLACE
I know I should know more about King’s X, especially since I did an
interview with Jerry Gaskill not too long ago. Unfortunately, that’s not the case, I never really heard a lot of their music, I just knew of their reputation of being a great band. So when I got my hands on a copy of their double live album
Live All Over The Place, I was pretty excited that I’d finally get a good feel for their music. What better way to get a first impression of a band than through a well produced, full budget live release?
While I have to be honest and say that their music isn’t completely my cup of tea, it is not bad by any means, just not something I’d listen to a lot. Ok, ok, so it’s not something I’d buy or put in my CD player on a regular basis, so what does that mean as far as reviewing this goes? I’ll tell you. The CD is very well produced, I’d say it’s up there amongst some of the best produced live albums, because a live recording is not very easy to capture. Sure you can set up some microphones, and hire a great producer, but a lot relies on the band. The band has to be able to present their music outside the studio just as well as they do inside the studio for something like this work, and I feel the quality of the musicianship is definitely there. You can tell these guys put a lot of energy and heart and soul into this and that is always a plus. Nothing worse than a mediocre band putting mediocre energy into a mediocre show, these guys actually know how to put groove into everything. If you are a Kings X fan, and you’re looking for a good live album, I’d say grab it as soon as you can.
Again, I may not be a big fan of their style, but I certainly can appreciate talent when I hear it, especially energetic talent that knows that they’re doing.
Also, the second disc on this is half acoustic and half electric, which is always cool. Acoustic sets always seem more intimate with the fans, whether you’re playing to 10 people or 10,000.
