STONED COUNCIL
When I first opened this DOG FACED GODS disc, I thought to myself "that sounds awfully familiar". After a quick web search, I realized that "Dog Faced Gods" is a track from my most favorite TESTAMENT disc,
Low. Having said that, my expectations for this disc were along those lines.
I was wrong. I wasn't disappointed; just wrong in my assumptions.
Stoned Council is, as you might imagine, stoner rock. I'm not the world's biggest fan of the stoner rock genre, but I tried to be an impartial judge when listening.
The single, or "hit single" as it's plastered on the disc cover is called "Brings Me Down", and I have to admit that this song brings me down...in the sense that I'll be really bummed out if the other fourteen tracks on this disc sound like it.
Do yourself a favor and skip to track 3. "Earth is Hell" has a nice groove and evokes a BODY COUNT vibe. Whatever happened to Body Count? Oh wait...
Here they are.
After that, head on over to track 6. It's called "Intro" and it really should have been the track to lead off this disc, because once "Water Pipe Bong" kicks in, we get to see a much more lighthearted view of DFG. I don't know, maybe the weed kicked in around the time they recorded track 6. Whatever the case,
Stoned Council gets a lot more listenable in its second half. They also prove that they can mellow out a bit with the ballad "Simple Man", which sounds quite close to the LYNYRD SKYNYRD original.
Like I mentioned earlier, I'm not a huge fan of the genre, but if you're about to partake in some of the sticky icky...then by all means,
Stoned Council could be just the right soundtrack.
