WITH TEETH
I'm not the world's most fanatical NINE INCH NAILS fan, but I know quite a few of them...enough to know that it's quite an event when Trent Reznor decides to unveil a new studio disc.
With Teeth is only the fourth full-length studio disc from NIN (not counting EP releases, live discs, etc), so when Reznor did reveal it to the world, his fans gobbled it up...with teeth (sorry, terrible pun/joke/whatever).
For someone like me, who is a fan of songwriting, or more to the point, melody and hook writing,
With Teeth is far more listenable than any of the past few NIN releases. The first single "The Hand That Feeds" is a simple, but brutally catchy rock tune, and I would think it's got a lot of crossover potential with remix DJs who would put it into dance clubs. It's also a far contrast to "All The Love In The World", the gloomy track that leads off the disc.
Fans of FOO FIGHTERS will be happy to know that Dave Grohl shows up on a number of the songs on
With Teeth, and perhaps that is why this disc is so accessible...then again, maybe it's just a nice compliment to the bevy of electronic drums and samples that Reznor usually incorporates into his music. Those clammoring for a more industrial sound will be happy with the second track on the disc, "You Know What You Are" which is a classic rage-filled anger fest riddled with frantic percussion, and if you're not all gloom-and-doom'ed out, you'll be happy to know that "Love Is Not Enough" should fill your depressing quota for the week.
As I mentioned previously, I'm not a huge NIN fan, but I know a good set of songs when I hear it. I guess all that time between studio records paid off for Trent Reznor, because that's exactly what you get
With Teeth (see what I did there? I incorporated the album title into the last sentence... because I am oh-so-clever...and perhaps if I didn't have to point it out, I would be even more clever...blech).
