A NIGHT TO REMEMBER - LIVE 2004
I had already heard and reviewed
the album that coincides with this DVD release before I received it, so I knew what was on here as far as the live performance. I have to be blunt though; the video quality of the live performance left some to be desired. It was shot with professional cameras, and I’m assuming professionals were behind the cameras. The angles of the shots are great, as are the framing and motion of the cameras, the problem lies in how grainy it looks. When there is a clear close up shot the picture is crisp but as the camera pans away or is trying to focus on something it looks grainy as ever, and it’s quite annoying. Points off for that, if you are going to shoot a show for a DVD, and you are obviously the kind of band that puts a lot of energy into perfecting your music, why wouldn’t you make sure you could get perfection as far as the filming goes? The set list is great, the band sounds great, the songs are played perfectly, but you just get the feeling that you need eyeglasses every time the camera wants to show you something else, which is every few seconds.
As far as the extras go, there are some interviews with EVERGREY members on here, which is always cool, there are also some music videos, and unless you have digital cable with all the extra channels, chances are you won’t normally get to see these on regular cable TV. One thing I wonder though, the band made it a point to sing all the songs in English while they performed for the DVD, but during the “home video” style footage, they spoke their native language and added subtitles…but even the subtitles had typos. I’m far from a perfectionist, just ask my editor (haha!), but I feel that if you are going to try to settle yourself into the ranks of successful musicians that put out worthwhile DVDs, you need to be a little more particular before you put the product out on the shelves. I really like Evergrey, they are one of my new favorite bands, so this is really just some constructive criticism, more importantly, I’m just pointing out the reasons I couldn’t give this DVD a rating of 5.
