OVER THE LIMIT
I love a good instrumental guitar based CD when I can get my hands on one, KEVIN ZUGSCHWERT's
Over The Limit
was just what I needed today. After a long day of stress at work
sometimes I need something that I can just sit and listen to. Often
times when I’m stressed, I’ll pop in some PANTERA, or BLACK LABEL
SOCIETY, or something else heavy and crunchy and scream along with the
vocals, but there are times when it doesn’t help and what I really need
is something to concentrate on other than my frustration.
Kevin’s guitar playing is amazing, he knows his way around the neck
very well, and very fast. The guy has so much feeling behind his
playing and every note is crystal clear, you can’t help but play some
air guitar along with it, although I doubt I’m even close to what he’s
playing. His crunchy rhythms are as thick and bold as something you’d
expect to hear from the likes of Anthrax while his solos and leads
remind me a lot of STEVE VAI or JOE SATRIANI. So far “Fire Dance” and
“Protecting The Mirror” are my favorite songs on this album. “Sandra’s
Song” is a beautifully played piano piece that also deserves to be
mentioned.
Also, some instrumental musicians make the horrible mistake of making
their songs way too long. I guess it must have something to do with the
mentality of since there are no vocals, there’s more opportunity to
show off your guitar skills, but this tends to get boring fast. Kevin
doesn’t have this problem, he knows when he has a good thing and he
doesn’t stretch out the songs just to show off, he plays the music,
does what has to be done, and ends the song. It’s also a good way of
saving material for other songs. Well done Kevin!
