HEART OF A RHINO
Anyone in a band will appreciate
Heart of a Rhino,
the latest offering from Boston's own ROBBY ROADSTEAMER. Why? Ok, let
me try to explain this as best I can. When you're in a band, and
rehearsing all week, sometimes what breaks out during your impromptu
jam sessions are songs of complete idiocy. The singer is just riffing
away lyrically on whatever the bass player, guitarist, drummer, and/or
keyboard player come up with...and generally, the results are, if
nothing else, funny. That's what Robby Roadsteamer is...the result of a
lot of jam sessions. Jam sessions that resulted with a band creating
some weird form parody/joke song.
Nick, the keyboard player in Robby Roadsteamer is a former bandmate of mine
(ahh, so THAT's why he's reviewing it...yeah, no shit Sherlock), and once I heard "I Put A Baby In You", the first track on
Heart of a Rhino,
I knew just where it was coming from. It was the result of some (maybe)
drunken jam sessions in some banged up rehearsal space somewhere in a
Boston suburb in which each member of the band conciously went off into
la-la land for a few minutes while someone thought up stupid lyrics
that no one on God's green earth will understand.
That, folks...is how you make a masterpiece.
Keep your eyes on Robby Roadsteamer. With any luck, in 25 years or so,
we'll be celebrating their induction into the Rock N' Roll Hall Of Fame.
