DIRTY DIAMONDS
ALICE COOPER has returned with the August 2 release of
Dirty Diamonds.
The "Godfather of Shock Rock" improved with this album, as his last few
efforts have fallen short of his glory days. Dirty Diamonds returns to
the genre of music that made Alice famous but still seems to fall short
of expectations.
The album kicks off with "Woman Of Mass Distraction," which is
one of my favorite songs on the release. The guitar riffs on the track
sound great and Cooper's vocals sound just as good. "Perfect", the
second track, is an ode to a gal who meets your low sexual-standards
but shouldn't be bragged about. The lyrics may give you a giggle, but
the song is nothing special and brings Dirty Diamonds down a notch.
"You Make Me Wanna" is another of the good tracks on
Dirty Diamonds.
Its catchy course, "You make me wanna woo-woo-woo" has been stuck in my
head since I heard it. The title track follows "You Make Me Wanna" and
it was enjoyable. "Dirty Diamonds" is fast-paced and made up for
"Perfect".
However, the album hits another pot-hole with "The Saga Of
Jesse Jane". Alice Cooper should never sing country music, yet he
attempts to do that very thing on this track. This song was so bad, I
almost gave up listening to the album. Moving along, "Sunset Babies
(All Got Rabies)" wasn't all bad but it was pretty forgettable.
"Run Down The Devil", "Steal That Car", and "Your Own Worst
Enemy" made the end of the disc better. All three tracks sounded good
and got me back into the album.
Dirty Diamonds
ended on a bad note though, "Zombie Dance" is sleep-enducing. The album
ended with a hip-hop influenced song, "Stand" (featuring XZIBIT), which
was awful. It features a rap verse, lots of "yeah"'s and Alice singing
a cheesy course.
All-in-all the album is mediocre. I liked it much more than Cooper's 2003 album,
The Eyes Of Alice Cooper,
but it still doesn't come close to his older releases. Some of the
songs are good, however, much of the album is filler. Here's hoping
Alice's next release is...well....better.
