TOMMYLAND: The Ride

I must admit that I am a MOTLEY CRUE fan. Always was and always will be. Now when Vince left and then Tommy went solo, things just weren’t really Crue. I even went out and picked up Tommy's METHODS OF MAYHEM disc and surely it was my musical taste half the time it did push many buttons. I never caught up to Never A Dull Moment, the second solo release from him.

In that time he finally woke up and went back to the Crue as with PAM. And now I hold a wholesome release from him. I can’t say it is all that I wanted to hear and two others listening were begging me to take it off. In many ways I chalked it up to him finally taking another step in the human growth process and releasing what could be considered Tommy’s SUGAR RAY record.

The first track “Good Times” is so that. “Hello, Again” does tread in some Beatles like areas but also some Soul Asylum sounds creep through. It seems to be Tommy’s alternative record. “Tryin To Be Me” is his coming to grips and story of the Paparazzi. Is it big headed singing about this or just truth? He asks, “Why the hell don’t they leave me alone”. This song isn’t all that bad. It is very catchy and the nine.

“Sister Mary” hits a bit hard almost going in that Foo Fighter area. He gets Robin Leech to open “Tired” that could be considered more Goldfinger or Weezer like. “I Need You” gives more of the commercial NIN effect… “Make Believe” might be a bigger hit and “Watch You Loose” goes in a NIRVANA (Local H) area for sure.

“Say Goodbye” brings it all to an end. NICK CARTER and other guests show up here on this record. Now the drumming is great but for me it is a lighthearted record. Those out there better get ready for that. Maybe it is good that he’s back with the Crue. Only a Crue fan would hope that they’d really think about making a heavy record as a band. Bring back the Too Fast Shout sounds and make them “Red Hot”.

Tommy did offer up a diverse record and it may just sell more than his previous records because he’s doing it more from the heart. I would think his fans would have wanted a heavier record.
