A DRUG FOR ALL SEASONS
The biggest shame about
A Drug for All Seasons
by F5 is that it's labled "File under MEGADETH featuring David
Ellefson"... Yeah, I know it's a great way to market Dave Junior's new
project, but come ON... the guy hasn't been involved with Dave Mustaine
for years, and it's not like those two are asshole buddies
anymore...well not unless a lawsuit for millions of dollars is a sign
of friendship. The good points about this disc far outweigh that
negative though; F5 is an outstanding debut from a band with some great
musicianship and songwriting skills. Sure, you could fixate on
Ellefson's bass lines, but thankfully, they're just there to hold up
the great songwriting, vocals, and guitar playing.
John Davis and Steve Conley are very tasteful guitarists who play for
the song, and not just to hear themselves wank about on their
instruments. Dale Steele has a great voice, and his gritty pipes rip
through very well on "Faded" and "Dissidence"... I really wanted to
hate the cover of EDIE BRICKELL's "What I Am", but it's pretty damn
good... A lot better than I predicted it would be, actually "Dying On
The Vine" really showcases his vocal chops well...he almost sounds like
a hybrid of Scott Weiland and Axl Rose (the lower registers, that is).
A Drug for All Seasons
makes up for almost every shitty side project that has ever passed over
my desk. The songs are great, the playing is outstanding, and it's
really cool to see that David Ellefson got himself hooked up with a
band that could really have an impact on the hard rock scene.
