NEED I SAY MORE
Gary Cherone has been blessed with one of the most versatile singing
voices ever recorded. He fronted the multi-platinum act EXTREME, and
went on to replace SAMMY HAGAR in VAN HALEN (a daunting task that
didn't resonate too well with fans -- the guy could nail all the songs
though). After his run in Van Halen, he formed TRIBE OF JUDAH back in
Boston, even went on to star in
Jesus Christ Superstar, and
with every new gig, he showcases his amazing vocal abilities. Never
have his chops been more evident than in his latest offering,
Need I Say More,
an four song EP that conjures up the soulful, laid-back pop music of
the 70's. Think HALL & OATES, if you can. While that might not be
the only 70's soul reference you could conjure up, it's certainly one
of the more prominant ones... A couple of white guys singing
predominantly black soul tunes. That's what Gary's doing with this EP.
A song like "Change My Mind" could easily land on smooth jazz stations
across the country, and be butted up against thirty year-old soul song
on an easy listening playlist. Whether or not Gary's EXTREME/VAN HALEN
past is going to stigmatize him remains to be seen. I certainly hope it
doesn't, because he's managed to musically transform himself once
again, and if this new approach catches on, it could mean another
chance at the spotlight for a more seasoned, evolved Gary Cherone.
