After listening to this album a few times, and trying to find something
positive to say, so as not to look like a “big meanie” in all my
reviews, I have exhausted myself. There are some nice upbeat dancy
rhythms and some memorable hooks in a lot of these songs, but
unfortunately, that doesn’t always make something good. Just because
there are positive attributes, doesn’t make it a good album on a whole.
Like many bands, I give these guys credit for trying, and for obviously
doing what they want with their own music. Our Own Flower just reminds
me too much of the typical emo/punk/mall alternative music that is
everywhere lately, it’s typical and overly predictable. As far as
musicianship, Hence Reverie are tight, they play well together and the
production is very nice, everything is mixed very clearly. My main
gripe is with the singing; I would like some cheese to go with my
whine! **Rim Shot** It seriously sounds at some points like the singer
is tone deaf, carrying some sour notes for far too long. One last
attack: The artwork… If you guys want to be taken seriously, then
what’s with the big purple and white flower for an album cover? I was
expecting some kind of chick band when I saw the packaging, then I
opened up to see a photo of 5 men. I don’t like to bash on people’s
artistic taste, but the artwork is definitely feminine.
