INDEX CASE
This
self-titled
release by INDEX CASE starts of with a furious sounding “Listen,” which
has a brutally catchy chorus. Index Case has a sound all their own,
which is a great thing, especially these days when a lot of heavier
bands stick to a formula and they all seem very predictable. Each song
on Index Case has it’s own flavor, but none of them stray too far from
the overall sound that the band was going for. Aside from just being
good musicians and knowing their way around their instruments, they are
also very good songwriters. There are plenty of changes in each song,
different levels of anger in the vocals, along with clean and monotone
vocals as well. I mention the monotone vocals on purpose because it’s
done in a way similar to Layne Staley’s monotone vocals on some AIC
songs, which I always liked. I have yet to notice a dull moment on this
disc. “Between Us” is the first mid-tempo song on the CD and it does
not stray from their sound and the song is definitely driven by Joe
Ansley’s powerful vocals. One thing that I absolutely have to mention
is how much the intro of “Fetish” reminds me of “Eulogy” by Tool. Index
Case blends a lot of elements from many bands that I like, and while
this doesn’t always work for everyone, these guys definitely made it
work for themselves. My only advice is to get a hold of this CD, you
will not regret it!
