CITY OF EVIL
The first time I heard AVENGED SEVENFOLD, I thought the same thing a lot of people thought; "Gee, another
Warped Tour screamo act", and I left it at that... unimpressed.
Holy moley, give a band a few albums to grow up and write some better material. I am thoroughly impressed with
City Of Evil.
They have fully developed into a bunch of tattooed headbangers with a
singer who took some time to learn how to sing! Go figure.
Frontman M. Shadows got his vocal cords kicked into shape by
surgery..and he also had the same vocal coach who trained Axl Rose and
Chris Cornell, and it really shows...because he managed to sound like
both of those guys in a few spots.
With its dual-guitar leads, riff-pasting, and sword-carrying skeleton on the cover,
City Of Evil
pays homage to bands like JUDAS PRIEST and IRON MAIDEN. Unlike so many
other acts who have attempted to blaze that path, Avenged Sevenfold
seem up to the task. If their major label debut is any indication of
their commitment to their craft, we should be hearing a lot more from
these guys.
