TWELVE YEAR SILENCE
On first listen to songs like "Taking Me Alive" and "Brother", I have to wonder WHY exactly
Clint Lowery left SEVENDUST
to start over with DARK NEW DAY. All of the writing you know from pas
Sevendust discs is ever-present on the first few tracks of
Twelve Year Silence.
However, to discount this as just Sevendust minus Lajon would be
unfair. You see, there's a lot of experience and history with Dark New
Day.
Brothers Clint Lowery and John Lowery grew up with guitarist Troy
McLawhorn, but also played together previously in STILL RAIN. Singer
Brett Hestla came up with VIRGOS MERLOT and CREED (not that you'd know
it; apparently Hestla wasn't allowed in the room when the band was
taking pictures), and drummer Will Hunt has played with SKRAPE and
TOMMY LEE's band. That's a lot of miles and band experience for a
five-piece band.
Obviously (and can I beat this into the ground any MORE), if you dig
Sevendust or STEREOMUD, you're going to like these tracks, although
there are some surprises. Hestla's voice morphs into a Layne Staley-ish
grind during "Lean" and he knows how to throttle back his voice and
harmonize on "That's Enough".
I think my favorite track so far is "Pieces"... from its pounding
guitar work to the gut-wrenching lyrics of a relationship gone sour,
this could make another potential single beyond the three already
chosen: "Taking Me Alive", "Brother", and "Free".
Twelve Year Silence isn't leaving my CD player for a while, that's for damn sure.
