THE WAIT OF GLORY
I can take progressive rock in doses. Now,
Classic Progressive Rock?
Holy moley, I'm in for it. PROTO-KAW is Kerry Livgren's (ex-KANSAS)
latest project, and to be perfectly honest, the only thing I know about
the guy is that he's responsible for "Carry on My Wayward Son" and
"Dust in the Wind," so I really tried to listen to this with an open
mind. This is his second disc of orignal songs with this project, by
the way.
The first thing I get a hint of with "Nevermore" is a little JETHRO
TULL mixed with some softer PINK FLOYD, but in vocal melody only. It's
a great, catchy melody...that eventually gives way to a guitar/keyboard
breakdown. Oh yeah, there's the progressive rock thing.
Imagine if you took those old Kansas arrangements, and made them more jazzy and symphonic...that's Proto-Kaw. I like
The Wait Of Glory a lot more than I thought I would, to be honest.
Fans of Jethro Tull are going to like this, and I hope that doesn't
come off as naive, but when you hear the vocals, you'll immediately
understand what I mean. The arrangements are plush, and the production
is really solid. It's a shame this genre doesn't really attract much of
a crowd in the U.S. these days, but I could see international audience
getting into this ecclectic mix of orchestra, rock, and very hooky
melodies.
