FROM THE FALLS TO THE PATH
BLUSH, and Ohio outfit formed in 2001 by brothers Andrew and Matt
Cushman along with sister Mary Cushman, has exactly what a band would
need to bust out of a local scene: disctinction. There's a lot of
talent in this group, and the lead off track to their latest disc,
From The Falls To the Path, "Teething", was a great choice. It's hooky, slightly dark, and very hummable.
The closest thing I have heard to Blush would be Shirley Manson's vocal
stylings with GARBAGE, only Mary Cushman has a glass-breaking (well,
not really) six octave range, which allows for some pretty angelic
vocal performances. My favorite tracks so far are the aforementioned
"Teething", "Is It Over", "Irrational", and "Accident" because these seem the most
likely to make an impact on radio. They stand out the most and get
stuck in the old noggin much quicker than any other tracks. Bill
Korecky (MUSHROOMHEAD) showcases his amazing production chops with this
punchy disc, and now that I see that Mike Zirkel (Garbage) mixed it, I
feel more confident in my earlier comparison.
Blush could be one of those bands that pushes through into the
spotlight in the coming years if they keep writing strong material like
this... it's nice to know local bands still have some ability.
