IV
I'm a little confused. You see, the buzz on this latest disc from Sully
Erna and the GODSMACK crew was that it was slightly "experimental".
Well, if Sully is "experimenting" with different ways to sound like
every other Godsmack disc, then I guess that would be an accurate
assessment.
IV sounds like the fourth studio disc from Godsmack. If you like Godsmack, you'll like
IV,
and it's about that simple. The band isn't going to convert any
non-fans into fans with this one, but it will certainly cater to the
groups already-massive fanbase. Sully has a very clear vision for what
he wants his band to sound like, and they have delivered another eleven
tracks that fit that vision perfectly.
The first single "Speak" is 100% Godsmack; Rombolla's radio-friendly
crunch riffs and Sully Erna's signature growl will keep this song on
the air for a while. "Enemy" is another track that fits the tried and
true Godsmack formula.
The band does deviate slightly with "Shine Down", adding some harmonica
and slightly more melody to the mix, and the acoustic "Hollow" shows
that the band has a softer side, but none of these ever really make you
think you're listening to anything other than Godsmack. "Voodoo" is an
homage to their earlier hit of a similar name and "Temptation" picks up
the tempo a little more then they're usually accustomed to.
IV
sold 210,000 units in its first week of release, so obviously poeple
are digging this disc. After three consecutive successful studio discs,
this band has figured out its award-winning formula, and they don't
show too many signs of changing it anytime soon.
