10,000 DAYS
Five years after
Lateralus, TOOL returns with another dark, etherial, but slightly less angry release with
10,000 Days.
This disc drifts a little more into A PERFECT CIRCLE territory (Maynard
James Keenan's side project) more than previous Tool discs, but it
doesn't take away from its appeal.
Named for the period of time between the initial stroke and eventual death of Keenan's mother, Judith Marie,
10,000 Days is an evolution of the Tool sound many fans (myself included) grew to love with
Ænima.
Most of the songs on this disc clock in at six or seven minutes, so
you'd better grab a snack and/or beverage before sitting with this one.
A few times during the course of this disc, the drums take a slight
hiatus, with "Wings For Marie" and "Right in Two" (in which they are
very subdued), and on other tracks, like the first single "Vicarious"
and "Jambi", they're smacking you in the face just like you know they
could.
The rhythms are far less staccato on
10,000 Days
than with previous efforts, but you can still tell that this is a Tool
disc. If anything, the band has evolved, which is what a band should do
if they're taking five years in between releases.
