THE GREAT ESCAPE
This disc from WE ARE SCIENTISTS offers only a taste of what you can expect from their full-length album,
With Love and Squalor. One of the songs, “The Great Escape” appears on the album, and the other, “This Means War” is only available on this import single. We Are Scientists come across as yet another group of dance rock revivalists whose entire existence is owed to Gang of Four. If you’re a fan of FRANZ FERDINAND, BLOC PARTY, THE BRAVERY, THE KILLERS, or any other band of that ilk, then you may like this.
“The Great Escape” has a distortion-laden solo and a fairly catchy groove, but I could swear I’ve heard these vocals done a million times before by other bands. “This Means War” deviates from their formula a little bit, and has a good hook in the chorus, but the whole thing just sounds generic throughout the verses. If you haven’t been exposed to this genre that has spawned so many of these garage/dance bands recently, then you may be more accepting of We Are Scientists, but if you’ve been anywhere near a radio or t.v. in the past three years, then you’ve heard this whole before.
